It was the Tuesday after the attack on Harrowbeer and Dana and Patty were heading towards the NAAFI.

Dana had thought long and hard about what Mel had had to say, and had come to the conclusion that there was no excuse for bad manners. She would apologise to Pete first chance she got. She had kept an eye out for him but it seemed that Pete was as elusive as ever, not surprising, considering she had been on the station for a whole month and only bumped into him once. They entered the NAAFI and Dana scanned the room, only to be disappointed when she found he was nowhere in sight. She turned to Patty. ‘I feel like such a fool. All week I’ve been determined to seek him out so that I can apologise, and it seems that he couldn’t give two hoots.’

Patty shrugged. ‘You heard what Mel said. As far as Pete’s concerned it’s easy come, easy go; he probably got over it before he’d left the Grafton. Who cares what Pete Robinson thinks? Besides, he could be on operations.’

Dana frowned. ‘No he’s not! He flies Spitfires, and they don’t fly at night. Besides, they went out this mornin’.’ She shot Patty a worried glance. ‘I hope he got back all right.’

Patty sighed heavily. ‘If he didn’t, it won’t be because you didn’t wish him luck because you didn’t see him this mornin’, so for goodness’ sake stop your frettin’.’ She indicated the dance floor, which was awash with pilots and aircrew. ‘And there’s plenty more fish in the sea.’

‘Patty!’ said Dana. ‘I’m not interested in them,’ hastily adding, ‘And I’m not interested in Pete either, I just wanted a chance to apologise for callin’ him a fibber and—’ She gave a short sharp squeak and pointed towards the door. ‘It’s him!’

‘Not that you’re interested.’ Patty chuckled, nudging Dana in the ribs with her elbow. ‘Aye up, he’s lookin’ for someone. I wonder who that could be?’

‘From what Mel says, anyone in a skirt,’ said Dana, her tone heavy with sarcasm.

‘Blimey, what happened to “I hope he got back all right”?’

Dana wrinkled her nose. ‘That’s when I thought he might be dead. Now I know he’s not I’m not so bothered.’

Patty got to her feet. ‘Well, I don’t know about you, but I didn’t come here just to sit on me backside.’ She held her hand out to Dana. ‘Come on, let’s show ’em how it’s done …’ She broke off as a young man in an engineer’s uniform tapped her on the shoulder.

‘Excuse me, miss, would you like to dance?’

Dana suppressed a giggle as Patty swapped her hand from Dana’s into his without so much as batting an eye, and led him towards the dance floor. Dana watched with amusement as the two fought to take the lead, before Patty succumbed.

The chair to the side of Dana scraped back and she automatically placed her hand on the seat. ‘Sorry, this one’s taken …’ she began before realising it was Pete.
